Ujjain – The Eternal City of Spirituality

Ujjain is one of India’s most ancient and sacred cities, revered for its deep spiritual roots, mythological importance, and historical legacy. Located on the serene banks of the Kshipra River, Ujjain has been a center of faith, learning, and culture for thousands of years. Geographically, Ujjain holds a unique position in ancient Indian science. It lies close to the Tropic of Cancer and was historically considered the prime meridian of India, making it a crucial center for astronomical studies and time calculations. This scientific importance added to its prominence as a hub of knowledge in ancient times. Historically known as Avantika, Ujjain flourished as a major political and cultural capital. It is closely associated with the legendary king Vikramaditya, whose reign is often regarded as a golden era of prosperity and wisdom. Over centuries, the city came under the influence of powerful empires such as the Maurya Empire and the Gupta Empire, further strengthening its position as a key center of trade, administration, and education. Ujjain’s spiritual significance is unmatched. It is home to the revered Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. This temple is especially known for its unique Bhasma Aarti, a sacred ritual performed at dawn, drawing devotees from across the country. The city is also one of the Sapta Puri, the seven holy cities believed to grant liberation.
