NARMADA PARIKRAMA – DIVINE JOURNEY
The Narmada Parikrama is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in India, where devotees perform a complete circumambulation of the holy Narmada River. Revered as a living goddess, Maa Narmada holds immense spiritual significance, and it is believed that even a दर्शन of the river grants divine blessings. Originating from Amarkantak and flowing towards the Arabian Sea near Bharuch, the Narmada River spans a journey of over 2600 kilometers. The Parikrama involves traveling along one bank of the river from its origin to the sea and returning via the opposite bank, completing a full sacred cycle.
Traditionally, this Parikrama is undertaken on foot and takes around 3 to 3.5 years, following strict spiritual disciplines like walking barefoot, maintaining a simple lifestyle, and not crossing the river. However, in modern times, a comfortable yatra by vehicle allows devotees to complete this divine journey in 7 to 15 days while still experiencing its spiritual essence. During the journey, pilgrims visit important spiritual destinations such as Omkareshwar Temple, Maheshwar, Garudeshwar, and the iconic Statue of Unity.
These sacred sites, along with numerous ghats and ashrams along the riverbanks, create a deeply spiritual and peaceful experience. Narmada Parikrama is not just a physical journey but a path of devotion, discipline, and self-realization. It offers an opportunity to disconnect from daily life and connect with nature, spirituality, and inner peace. The best time to undertake this yatra is between October and March, when the weather is pleasant and suitable for travel.
