ANDHARBAN JUNGLE TREK
The Andharban Trek, whose name translates to “Dark Forest” in Marathi, is one of the most scenic jungle treks in the Sahyadri ranges of Maharashtra. Located near Pimpri village in the Tamhini Ghat region of Mulshi, the trek is renowned for its dense evergreen forests, mist-covered trails, waterfalls, and breathtaking valley views. Unlike most Sahyadri treks that involve steep climbs, Andharban is primarily a descending trek, making it accessible to beginners while still offering an adventurous and immersive experience in nature.

Andharban Jungle Trek: Whispers of the Dark Forest
The trek begins near Independence Point and follows a trail through thick forest cover, eventually ending near the backwaters of Bhira Dam. Covering approximately 13–14 kilometers, the journey usually takes between five and seven hours to complete. Throughout the route, trekkers are treated to spectacular views of the Kundalika Valley, flowing streams, seasonal waterfalls, and rich biodiversity that includes a variety of birds, butterflies, and native flora.
The dense canopy overhead often limits sunlight from reaching the forest floor, creating the unique “dark forest” atmosphere from which the trek gets its name. The monsoon season, from June to September, is considered the best time to experience Andharban in its full glory. During this period, the forest comes alive with lush greenery, waterfalls gush down the hillsides, and clouds drift through the valleys, creating a magical landscape.
However, the trail can become slippery and challenging due to heavy rainfall, so trekkers should wear sturdy footwear, carry rain protection, and exercise caution during stream crossings. While the trek is generally categorized as easy to moderate in difficulty, its long distance and humid conditions require a reasonable level of fitness and endurance.
